This is Moorcroft Art Pottery. This style includes production techniques whereby enamel glazes are applied and worked in stages upon a modeled pottery form, and fired several times in a kiln. It is noted that old Moorcroft is not inherently "perfect"- larger pieces were still wheel thrown in this era and as such have wheel thrown marks like little dents in the pottery which are glazed over. This isn't damage- this is part of the history of old pottery and how it was made. Ribbing is a technique of pottery making, involving
using special tools on wheel thrown pottery. The skill takes time to acquire and it is associated with art pottery rather than mass production.
The Moorcroft factory started in 1913 under the direction of William Moorcroft, an experienced pottery designer and potter. The Moorcroft factory was famous for its famous hand-painted art pottery. Moorcroft pottery is often referred to as Florian Ware and Flambé ware which included highly developed glaze designs with vibrant colors. Queen Mary was an avid collector and in 1928 granted William and later, his son, Walter a royal warrant.
